Calcification

Salt buildup is a common issue for boat owners, especially in coastal areas. Proper maintenance of your engines’ exterior not only enhances its appearance but also extends its lifespan. Here’s a simple guide to effectively clean salt deposits using basic products.

What You’ll Need

– Mild Detergent

– CLR (Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover), such as Salt-Away

Cleaning Steps

Prepare the Cleaning Solution:

Mix 1 tablespoon of mild detergent with 1 gallon of warm water. Always check the label for specific instructions regarding the cleaning product you choose.

Scrub the Affected Areas:

Using a soft-bristled brush or cloth, dip it into the cleaning solution. Gently scrub the stained areas to remove salt buildup.

Rinse and Dry:

Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water to eliminate any remaining detergent. Follow up by drying the surface with a microfiber cloth to prevent scratches.

Post-Cleaning Care

Protect the Surface:

After cleaning, apply a marine-grade wax or protective coating to the area. This helps prevent future staining and keeps your boat looking its best.

Regular Maintenance:

Regularly inspect and maintain the gearbox to prevent corrosion and staining. This proactive approach can save you time and effort in the long run.

What to Avoid

Harsh Chemicals:

Avoid using bleach or strong acids, as these can damage the engine’s surface. If you encounter stubborn stains, repeat the cleaning process with mild solutions before considering more aggressive methods.

By following these steps, you can effectively manage salt buildup and keep your engine in great condition.
